Writing Instruments

Your dunhill writing instrument is covered by an international guarantee for a period of 24 months from the date of purchase against faults in materials and workmanship, irrespective of the country of purchase. Your dunhill writing instrument will be repaired free of charge, within this period, provided that the fault falls within the terms of this guarantee.

Damage and/or defects caused by fair wear and tear, accidents, use which is unreasonable or inconsistent with dunhill's instructions, dismantling or repair by persons other than authorised dunhill repair specialists, or the use of components or accessories other than those recommended by dunhill are not covered by this guarantee. Leads, erasers and ink refills, exhausted in the course of normal use, are also excluded.

This guarantee is only valid provided that the guarantee card is properly completed by a dunhill shop or authorised dealership from which your writing instrument is purchased and returned with your dunhill writing instrument.

Should your dunhill writing instrument require attention, please send or take it to a dunhill Service Centre or Store, enclosing the completed guarantee card. If sending your writing instrument by post we recommend that you pack it securely in a padded envelope and insure it prior to mailing. For fountain pens, also remove the cartridges or the converter.

Please note that your rights under the guarantee are subject to your compliance with dunhill's instructions as set out above. Please read the instructions carefully.

• Ballpoint, Converter (Rollerball or Ballpoint) and Pencil
  
  Writing Instrument Service Procedures:
  
  - The writing instrument is disassembled into its component parts.
  - The parts are checked for wear and replaced where necessary.
  - The cap and case is cleaned in an ultrasonic tank, which cleans even the smallest particles.
  - The cap and case are dried and the whole writing instrument is oiled and assembled to original specifications.
  - A new refill is fitted to the pen, and new leads and erasers are added to the pencil.
  
  Writing Instrument Testing Procedures:
  
  - The cap is tested to ensure it stays on the body securely while in the pocket.
  - The clip is checked to ensure the grip is sufficient and there is no distortion.
  - The mechanism is actioned many times to ensure the function is correct. Ballpoint and Rollerball refills are checked for width and colour.
  - The writing instrument is given a final clean using a soft polishing cloth.
  - The writing instrument is placed in the presentation pouch.
  
  
  
• Fountain Pen
  
  Writing Instrument Service Procedures:
  
  - The writing instrument is disassembled into its component parts.
  - The parts are checked for wear and replaced where necessary.
  - The nib unit is disassembled, checked for wear and damage, then cleaned and reassembled.
  - The cap and case is cleaned in an ultrasonic tank, which cleans even the smallest particles.
  - The cap and case are dried and the whole pen is assembled to original specifications.
  
  Writing Instrument Testing Procedures:
  
  - The cap is tested to ensure it stays on the body securely while in the pocket.
  - The clip is checked to ensure the grip is sufficient and there is no distortion.
  - A cartridge is fitted to the nib unit and the nib is tested for function, including ink width and smoothness of writing.
  - The cartridge is removed and the nib cleaned to remove the excess ink.
  - A new cartridge is included with the pen, but not fitted, to avoid ink drying in the nib, blocking the flow.
  - The writing instrument is placed in the presentation pouch.

When carrying a writing instrument, always try to keep it in a leather case or pouch. This will protect the lacquer, resin or plated finish. The plated finish, in particular, is sensitive to scratches. Once it is scratched, it can be very difficult if not impossible to remove these marks.

• Fountain Pen
  Always use fresh ink. dunhill do not recommend that you use ink that has been opened for over one year, as it thickens over time.
  
  Your fountain pen will function better if it is cleaned every two months, by rinsing the nib. Never clean a pen in hot water or alcohol. Use tepid water. Shake out any excess water and dry the nib with a soft cloth.
  
  If you will not be using your pen for a while, remove the cartridge or ink and clean it by flushing with tepid water.
  
  After being in any environment where there might be changes in air pressure (for example in a plane or on a train) you should uncap the pen with the tip pointed upwards. A sudden change in cabin pressure may cause any fountain pen to leak. To reduce the likelihood of this happening, you should either completely fill your pen, or empty it of ink before you travel.
  
  Always replace the cap after use to avoid excess evaporation of the ink. If your pen is accidentally dropped, please be aware that ink may spill into the cap and could leak out.
  
  
• Rollerball
  An important note on rollerball refills. To prevent any risk of ink leakage, always retract the tip when not in use. Contact with the rollerball will draw ink out from the refill, therefore you should ensure that no material comes into contact with the tip, even when it is retracted (e.g. shirt, pocket lining).
  
  
• Pencil
  For the smoothest writing and the most accurate fit, we strongly recommend that you only use dunhill leads. The part of a pencil that is most likely to need attention is the retraction mechanism. This is something that you should leave to an authorised Service Centre.
  
  
• Ballpoint
  dunhill ballpoint refills will provide you with hours of smooth writing, and changing them is a simple procedure. See User Instructions.
