Leather Care

Tradition Canvas

The Tradition canvas range is made from cotton canvas, edged with vegetable tanned English bridle leather. The advantage of this type of leather is that it looks beautiful, and that over time it will develop a patina, a personality that makes the piece unique. However, there are certain characteristics of this type of leather that you need to be aware of .

The leather gets its feel and look through the use of tallow-oils and waxes rubbed in to the leather. Over time, this tallow may come up to the surface of the leather (particularly if the piece is not used for a while). This appears as a white film on the surface of the leather. Called blooming this is a sign of high quality vegetable tanned leather, and is to be expected. Gentle polishing with a soft cloth or brush will allow the tallow to be reabsorbed back into the leather. To maximize the life of your Tradition piece, we recommend that you polish it every few months, and add extra tallow to it if required. For this reason, each piece comes with a brush and tallow pot.

The canvas can be cleaned using a normal clothes brush or for more stubborn marks a damp cloth.

NO PRODUCTS CONTAINING SOLVENTS SHOULD EVER BE USED ON THE LEATHER OR OTHER MATERIALS

Another feature of the range is the use of untreated brass for the hardware-the lock, shoulder strap attachments and so on. Again, these have been made to develop a patina over time. If you prefer the hardware to remain shiny and new looking, you can buff the brass hardware lightly with a brass cleaner. However, great care should be taken not to get any cleaner on the leather. This will stain the leather irrevocably.

General Care Comments

When not in use, large leather items should always be stored in the original pouch. If your item is not going to be used for a long period of time, dunhill recommends that you pad out the inside with tissue paper to maintain the shape.

dunhill also recommends that you do not overfill your item of leather, as this can distort the shape. Overfilling large leather goods, can also strain the strap, the zips and the locks.

It is advisable to avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, as the colour of your Tradition Canvas piece could be affected.
