The Driving Jacket

The Driving Jacket draws directly from one of the earliest dunhill leather jackets made for motorists, closely referencing a design featured in the 1912 Motorities House catalogue.

Designed to protect motorists from the exposed conditions of the road, leather clothing became one of the defining specialisms of the early House. A 1901 advertisement in The Autocar described Alfred Dunhill as “the largest Leather Clothing Manufacturer in the world”, while the magazine also noted that every garment was cut at the Conduit Street store by experienced West End cutters under Alfred’s personal supervision.

That approach is closely observed in the contemporary Driving Jacket. Its silhouette, chocolate-brown French lambskin plongé and pared-back stand collar reference the 1912 design, while the width of the stitching and proportions of the horn buttons have been studied from the archive garment. Patch pockets retain their original utility, while a clean, softly tailored construction allows it to sit comfortably between jacket and outerwear, reinterpreting an enduring House design for today.
