Icons of the modern game
Among the guests at The Hurlingham Club for the Alfred Dunhill Padel Classic was former England footballer and broadcaster Jamie Redknapp – a man whose enduring charm, authenticity, and relaxed refinement embody the modern gentleman. In conversation with dunhill, Redknapp reflected on his playing career with characteristic humility.
Discussing padel and the nature of competition, he said, “You need to learn how to win and how to lose, I think that’s what makes you as a person.” Regarding style, he’s definitely a traditionalist. “There’s nothing better than putting a great suit on [with a] shirt and tie – although that seems to be going out of fashion now. But when someone makes an effort, it looks amazing.” He is quick to remind us that the hallmarks of a true gentleman lie not in what he wears, but in his character. “Work hard, be nice to people if you can, leave a lasting impression – that’s something I stand for.”
